Modafinil

Generic name: Modafinil
Brand name: Provigil

Modafinil is a prescription medication that's approved by America's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness). Modafinil is also used along with breathing devices or other treatments to prevent excessive sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep apnea / hypopnea syndrome. It is a stimulant, and as such, you should be specifically diagnosed with one of the stated sleep disorders before taking this medication.

Modafinil works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the area of the brain that controls sleep and wakefulness. It will not cure any sleep disorder; it merely treats the symptom of sleepiness. Modafinil should not be used in place of getting enough sleep.
